Genoeg van gif! Tijd voor actie tegen gifgebruik in de sierteelt

Steeds meer onderzoek laat zien hoe schadelijk landbouwgif (pesticiden) is. Het gebruik ervan wordt in verband gebracht met ernstige ziekten zoals kanker en Parkinson, en het veroorzaakt grote schade aan natuur en dieren. Vooral de sierteelt is een sector die extreem veel van deze giftige middelen gebruikt. Toch biedt Amsterdam tijdens ‘Nationale Tulpendag’ elk jaar opnieuw een podium aan een reclamestunt van deze vervuilende en ziekmakende industrie, waar vorig jaar 9 gifsoorten op de tulpen zijn ontdekt. Daarom komen politieke partijen, organisaties én jullie opnieuw in actie. Wij hebben genoeg van gif!

Een cocktail van (verboden) gif
Tijdens ‘Nationale Tulpendag’ worden er jaarlijks duizenden tulpen tentoongesteld op het Museumplein, die bezoekers gratis mogen plukken. Dit lijkt op een feestelijke traditie, maar in werkelijkheid is het een promostunt van een vervuilende industrie. Want ook Tulpen Promotie Nederland, de organisator, blijkt schuldig aan gifgebruik te zijn.  

Uit tests die Pesticide Action Network vorig jaar uitvoerde, bleek namelijk dat de tulpen op het Museumplein zorgwekkende pesticiden bevatten. Er werden maar liefst negen(!) verschillende gifstoffen aangetroffen, waaronder twee verboden middelen. Beide verboden stoffen zijn schadelijk voor de voortplanting, één ervan was neurotoxisch (giftig voor het zenuwstelsel). Ook werd een PFAS-pesticide gevonden, een stof die zich opstapelt in het milieu en moeilijk afbreekbaar is. Lees hier meer over de testresultaten van PAN.

Door dit gifgebruik worden mens en milieu in de hele keten blootgesteld aan mogelijke schadelijke risico’s: denk aan de arbeiders in de sierteelt, verkopers bij de groothandel en in bloemenwinkels, en uiteindelijk consumenten. Maar ook insecten, vogels en waterdieren komen met deze chemicaliën in aanraking, met alle gevolgen van dien.

Pluk geen gif, maar zaai hoop!
In plaats van in een kilometerslange rij te gaan staan om een bosje gif te plukken, kun je ook bij onze demonstratie aansluiten of langskomen, verderop het Museumplein. Bij ons vind je gifvrije en biologische alternatieven, ontdek je wat de impact van pesticiden is op mens, dier en natuur, kun je in gesprek met andere actievoerders, én genieten van kunst en muziek!

More and more research shows how harmful agricultural toxins (pesticides) are. Their use is linked to serious diseases such as cancer and Parkinson's, and they cause great damage to nature and animals. The floral industry in particular uses extremely high levels of these toxic substances. Nevertheless, every year during “National Tulip Day”, Amsterdam provides a platform for an advertising stunt by this polluting and harmful industry, despite nine types of toxins having been discovered on the tulips last year. That is why political parties, organizations, and you are taking action again. We have had enough of toxins!

A cocktail of (banned) toxins
During "National Tulip Day", thousands of tulips are displayed on Museumplein every year, which visitors are allowed to pick for free. This seems like a festive tradition, but in reality it is a promotional stunt by a polluting industry. Tulpen Promotie Nederland, the organizer, has also been found guilty of using toxins.

Tests conducted by the Pesticide Action Network last year revealed that the tulips on Museumplein contained alarming levels of pesticides. No fewer than nine (!) different toxins were found, including two banned substances. Both banned substances are harmful to reproduction, one of which was neurotoxic (toxic to the nervous system). A PFAS pesticide was also found: a substance that accumulates in the environment and is difficult to break down. Read more about PAN's test results here.

The use of these toxins exposes people and the environment throughout the chain to potentially harmful risks: think of workers in the floriculture industry, wholesalers and florists, and ultimately consumers. But insects, birds, and aquatic animals also come into contact with these chemicals, with all the consequences that entails.

Don't pick poison, but plant hope!
Instead of standing in a kilometer-long line, together with tourists, to pick poison, you can also join our demonstration on Museumplein.
